Rugs

There are two general classification for rugs hand made and
machine made. Rugs are made by weaving thick fabric or
yarn. There are a larger number of machine made rugs
because of the greater ease of production. Handmade rugs
are more rare because of the added time and difficulty in
manufacture. Rugs are used to cover floor and sometimes to
decorate walls.

A machine made rug may be easily identified by the fringe
which is usually attached or sewn at the back. But a fringe
in a hand made rug is a part of the rug and foundation of
the rug. A hand made rug has many inconsistencies in the
design associated with crookedness and many flaws are
clearly visible. Synthetic materials are generally used in
making of machine made rugs, but certain machines can use
wool for making rugs.

You may hear such terms as, gun tufted, soumak,
needlepoint, and chain stitch. However there are two main
divisions in handmade rugs, flat weave and knotted rugs.
These are considered to have the best quality.

You should be careful while buying a handmade rug, because
there are many rugs which are listed as hand made but have
a lower quality. You have to ask about the type and mode of
making of the rug. Though hand tufted or hand hooked rugs
are types of hand made rugs, they have lower quality in
terms of quality and durability when compare to hand
knotted or hand woven rugs. Tufted, stitched or hooked rugs
are cheaper comparing to hand knotted or hand woven rugs. A
fraction of the price of hand knotted or hand woven rugs
may equal to the price of tufted, stitched or hooked rugs.
You can easily detect the tufted rugs from the hand knotted
rugs by seeing the back of the rugs. If you see cloth or
canvas type material on the back which used to hide the
glue that holds the fibers in place that is a tufted rug.

There are advantages and disadvantages of both handmade and
machine made rugs. The advantage of a handmade rug is that
the whole or a part of the rugs can be repair by rewoven or
knotted to fix the damages. A handmade rug may last for
more than a century if it is properly cared for. The beauty
of hand made rugs remain longer than the machine made rugs.
In the case of machine made rugs the facility of repairing
is not possible and durability of the rug is low.

The quality of a rug depends on the type of material used
for making the rug and the mode of knotting. The finer the
knotting method the higher is the price. The number of
knottings of the rug is calculated by dividing the number
of knots to the number of centimeter or meter in the square
area or the rug.
